What Are Bear-Wise Standards?

Bear-wise standards are guidelines designed to minimize human-bear conflicts.

Bear‑Wise Standards: A Short Guide for Safer Living in Bear Country

Being Bear‑Wise means adopting habits that keep both people and bears safe. These standards are built on respect, prevention, and consistency—simple actions that make a big difference in reducing human‑bear conflicts.

At Home or Camp

  • Secure attractants. Store garbage, recycling, and pet food in certified bear‑resistant containers.
  • Clean up food sources. Remove bird feeders, fallen fruit, and grease from grills.
  • Lock it up. Keep doors, windows, and vehicles closed when unattended.

Outdoors and Worksites

  • Stay alert. Make noise when hiking or working in dense vegetation.
  • Travel smart. Move in groups and avoid dawn or dusk when bears are most active.
  • Carry bear spray. Keep it accessible and know how to use it effectively.

Community Standards

  • Educate and share. Encourage neighbors and coworkers to follow Bear‑Wise practices.
  • Report sightings. Notify local wildlife authorities of bear activity near homes or camps.
  • Lead by example. Consistent behavior across the community prevents bears from becoming food‑conditioned.

Living Bear‑Wise isn’t just about safety—it’s about stewardship. Every clean campsite, secured bin, and informed neighbor helps keep bears wild and communities safe.
